To mark International Women’s Day, this week we will honour the incredible women shaping our communities. Today, we shine a spotlight on Karen Gress, whose dedication has transformed the lives of countless seniors in Thames Centre.
As the first dedicated hire for the Senior Centre in Dorchester, Karen built a welcoming space where seniors feel connected, engaged, and valued. Under her leadership, membership has grown to over 600, as the space has evolved into the Active Living Centre—a thriving community hub with diverse programs, passionate volunteers, and a strong sense of belonging.
Karen played a key role in securing a generous estate donation, which helped double the Active Living Centre’s size, adding new activity rooms, a commercial kitchen, and a community hall. Beyond the Centre’s walls, she ensures that no senior feels isolated, launching virtual programs and weekly updates filled with community news and a touch of humour.
Her leadership has inspired over 70 volunteers, making events like the much-loved monthly hot meal lunches possible. Thanks to Karen, Thames Centre seniors continue to thrive.
