The Commissioners of Oaths services provided for by the Municipality of Thames Centre include the administration of an oath, affirmation or declaration in accordance with the Commissioners for Taking Affidavits Act, 1990.
Affidavits are verified documents containing sworn statements. All parties required to sign the document must be present and must provide valid photo identification in order to have a document commissioned. The Clerk or designate (Commissioner of Oaths) will review the document to determine if it meets the specifications.
- The Municipality does not have a Notary Public on staff, and the Municipality's Commissioners of Oaths cannot notarize documents or certify true copies.
- The Commissioner of Oaths reserves the right to refuse commissioning services of any document.
- The Municipal Office is not responsible for the content of the affidavit, and does not supply blank affidavit forms.
Commissioners cannot offer any legal advice, or prepare or edit affidavits/statements. Any assistance pertaining to an affidavit should be directed to the agency or party that has requested the form.
Declarants must sign in the presence of a Commissioner of Oaths. Photo identification must also be presented.
Commissioners of Oaths services are offered at the municipal office by appointment only, Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Please contact the Clerk's Office (clerk@thamescentre.on.ca) to make an appointment.
A charge of $20 will be applied for all documents requiring the signature of a Municipal commissioner of oaths, as per the Fees and Charges By-law.
