Source Protection Joint Risk Management Services Agreement
THAMES CENTRE - March 18, 2024 – Thames Centre Celebrates World Water Day through partnership with Upper Thames River Conservation Authority for Water Protection
The 2024 Budget marked a significant milestone in environmental stewardship as the Municipality shifts its focus towards enhanced water protection measures. As part of this initiative, the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority (UTRCA) will undertake the Municipal Source Water Protection responsibility, amounting to a dedicated allocation of approximately $30,000 towards Source Water Protection functions. The parties signed the agreement in recognition of World Water Day.
This strategic agreement, in accordance with the Clean Water Act, 2006, aims to develop and execute a collaborative program integral to the Thames Centre Source Water Protection Plan's implementation.
Under the provisions of the Ontario Clean Water Act, 2006, UTRCA has been entrusted with Part IV authorities, acting on behalf of the Municipality. This delegation underscores UTRCA's commitment to upholding rigorous standards in water management and environmental preservation.
Furthermore, UTRCA has established a specialized Risk Management Office, staffed by designated Risk Management Officials (RMO) and Risk Management Inspectors (RMI), responsible for ensuring the effective execution of water protection protocols at the regional level.
By entering this agreement, Thames Centre reaffirms its dedication to safeguarding water resources and fostering sustainable practices for the benefit of present and future generations.
“Council looks forward to collaborating with UTRCA on this agreement, acknowledging that working together in areas of shared mandates achieves the most effective result.” Mayor Sharron McMillan
“Our community's health and wellbeing hinge on safeguarding our drinking water sources. World Water Day serves as a poignant reminder to elevate our efforts in protecting them. Collaborating with UTRCA's experts enables our Planning and Development division to focus on its core responsibilities effectively.” CAO David Barrick
