Don't Blow It: Keep Grass Clippings Off the Road

Why It Matters

Blowing grass clippings onto the road might seem harmless, but it can lead to several issues:

  1. Pothole Formation: Damp grass clippings on gravel roads can clump together and, when graded into the gravel, contribute to pothole formation.
  2. Poor Drainage: Organic debris from vegetation on the road can slow down drainage by getting into the gravel. It can also block catch basins and storm water drains, affecting drainage on your property.
  3. Reduced Traction: Wet grass clippings on paved roads can make surfaces slippery for vehicles and cyclists, especially during braking.

What You Can Do

  • Leave Clippings on Your Lawn: Grass clippings act as natural fertilizer, returning water and nutrients (especially nitrogen) to your lawn without adding to thatch buildup. This promotes greener, healthier, and thicker grass.
  • Mow Regularly: Don’t let your grass grow too long before mowing to prevent excessive clippings that take longer to decompose.
