New Mural Project Announced

THAMES CENTRE – Council has approved a new mural project in Thames Centre!

The Municipality will be partnering with Andrew Gunn Consulting to develop several new murals in the community over the next two years.

“These murals will help tell our local stories, make our community more vibrant, and attract visitors to Thames Centre,” noted Tom Heeman, Chair of the Economic Development Advisory Committee. “These kinds of artistic projects have helped generate tourism and economic activity in other communities in the region, and we can see the same benefits here.”

To date, Andrew Gunn Consulting has curated large-scale murals in London, including at the London International Airport, VIA Rail station, Grand Theatre, Canada Life Place, and London Children’s Museum. Additional projects have been completed in St. Thomas, Port Stanley, Aylmer and Simcoe.

“Over the past five years, our team has collaborated with several communities in southern Ontario to install spectacular, large-scale murals in distinctive settings,” says Andrew Gunn. “Murals are one of the defining artforms of the twenty-first century. Photos of the artwork are shared on social media to promote communities, and this is a key tool to spark economic and cultural development for cities, towns and rural areas. We work with professional mural artists to generate designs that inspire residents and attract visitors. Now, we are very excited to help tell the story of Thames Centre!”

The mural project was recommended by the Economic Development Advisory Committee, and funding was approved for $24,860 over two years to assist with the development of mural designs and initial production costs.

The Economic Development Advisory Committee is also looking for new members. Potential members can fill out an expression of interest to join the committee at https://thamescentre.on.ca/documents/expression-interest-economic-development-advisory-committee.

Residents can follow the progress of this project at https://www.youngandfreepress.ca. Thames Centre residents, businesses, and property owners interested in the project can contact Andrew Gunn directly by email at gunn@andrewgunnconsulting.ca.
